• Community service is an activity that benefits our community. MTCHS requires students to perform nine (9) hours of community service each academic year. Students do not receive compensation for community service.

Students will develop a plan and earn hours by completing school-sponsored community service activities and/or student-initiated community service.

School-sponsored community service is an activity that is sponsored by MTCHS or one of the MTCHS organizations. Refer to examples listed below. The MTCHS sponsor of each activity will have a sign-in sheet for participants at the activity which will be used to track community service hours. Copies of these sheets will be submitted to the instructor.

Student-initiated community services involves a student identifying a need in the community, obtaining approval from the instructor, and performing the community service on their own. Students must have the activity approved by the instructor prior to engaging in it. These hours will be reported to the instructor as instructed at the time approval is granted.

Students will earn 10 points for each hour of community service they complete. Grading will include:

    • Quarter 1 - Completion of Community Service Plan (10 points)
    • Quarter 2/Semester 1 - At least 3 hours completed for grades 9, 11 & 12
    • Quarter 3 - A total of at least 6 hours completed for all grades
    • Quarter 4/Semester 2 - A total of 9 hours completed for all grades

NOTICE TO SENIORS ONLY: May 4-8 is the last week of school for MTCHS seniors. The curriculum and activities planned that week focus on Community Service. Participation during this week is tied directly to each student's Citizenship and Professionalism grade. Seniors have three pathways to complete the requirements.

    • Please note that students will not be eligible to receive their diploma or participate in the graduation ceremony until these requirements are met.
    • Students who meet the criteria by May 1 and are passing all of their classes do not have to attend school the week of May 4-8.

Notifications have been sent indicating each senior's status. These included:

Option A: The Service Bonus - Complete an additional 20 hours of Community Service outside of MTCHS by May 1. Note: This hourly requirment may be reduced based on an individual student's attendance record.

Option B: The Attendance Bonus - Do not exceed a total of 40 hours of absences and tardies for the entire school year by May 1.

Option C: The On-Campus Path - Students who do not meet the criteria for Option A or B must attend MTCHS from May 4-8 to complete the planned community service activities on-site.
